12 - Super Focus Mode
Or as normal humans call it… flow
What is super focus mode`?
- Super focus mode is the name I used for flow before I knew what flow was. Essentially, flow is being entirely absorbed in the task at hand, or as I called it, being “super focused”. I’m not going to go into the details of flow here but there is so much information online on the subject. I would also recommend the book “The Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance” for an interesting and fun look at flow.
Why should I try super focus mode?
- The “super focus” of flow means that flow is also super productive. I get so much more [and better] work done when I’m in flow. Flow makes you more creative, more present, and you might even find yourself enjoying your work while in flow.
How do I get into super focus mode?
Not going to lie, getting into a flow state is hard. For the first few years of me experimenting with flow, back when I called it “super focus mode”, I could only do it early in the morning, and not for very long at a time. But like everything, you’ll get better the more you practice.
To get started, I would suggest eliminating all your distractions. Go somewhere you can focus, turn off your phone, and make a clear plan for what you want to do. Then just get to work. It’s kind of like Pomodoro, in that you want to bring your focus back to work every time you get distracted. The difference is you want to end up in that place where the world goes quiet and you are in the zone. You know what I’m talking about because you’ve been there before. And now, you just have to try to find your way back. And don’t stress, it doesn’t happen right away, because worst case, you’re still getting work done and training your attention. Congrats!
12 – Try out “super focus mode” and see if you can find yourself in flow. And when you’re ready for your next challenge, head on over to step 13.
